Here in Ann Arbor, my blue collar duties bring me in daily contact with workers of various collars, and I've found to a person, in discussing unfolding events, that the support for "total war" is very thin -- at least so far. After weathering dozens of horrific proposals, I gently ask, "And then what?" They shrug. They don't know. Then comes the history lesson, and it is amazing how receptive they are. Most have no idea that the CIA trained Bin Laden; and many didn't know the amount of money we give Israel per year. In the coming days, weeks, months, it is incumbent upon us to advance the idea of an alternate US policy, but gently and with empathy. People are scared. They don't want another attack, but fear an all-out war might inspire one, or two, or three . . . As Leo's fav Chomsky has said, the American people would be horrified if they knew the amount of blood that is on their hands. I'm afraid they're gonna learn more about this than I'm sure they care to. But there's no turning back now.
