The Poll Driven War....

Poll: 81 Percent Urge U.S. to Wait to Retaliate Last Updated: September 16, 2001 11:01 PM ET http://www.reuters.com/news_article.jhtml?type=politicsnews&StoryID=223697# NEW YORK (Reuters) - Four out of five Americans polled this weekend said the United States should hold off on using military force to retaliate against the worst terror attack in U.S. history, an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showed on Sunday.

Before using military force, 81 percent of those polled said the United States should be "completely sure who is specifically responsible" for attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and on the Pentagon near Washington, said NBC pollster Peter Hart.

Seventy-three percent of the 821 people surveyed said they were confident the United States would capture or kill Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the attacks.

Sixteen percent surveyed said that they were worried that a family member or friend might have been killed or injured in the attacks.

In New York, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said that 4,957 people were missing and 190 confirmed dead. The toll of missing and injured at the Pentagon crash site totaled 187 while 45 died in the Pennsylvania plane crash.

Meanwhile, half of the Americans polled said they have "a great deal" of confidence in President Bush's ability to manage the crisis, while 29 percent said they have "quite a bit of confidence" in the president.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
