Clear Channel's "Do Not Play" List

Clear Channel Communications, Inc., Fortune 500 company and owner of 10% of U. S. radio stations (receives 20% of U. S. radio ad revenue), has sent a list of songs to its stations that it "recommends its stations not play". The list includes many songs that could be taken as insensitive to recent tragedies, but also includes many songs with anti-war messages (Edwin Starr's "War", John Lennon's "Imagine") and "any song by Rage Against the Machine."

The recommendations to not play many of the songs (e.g., "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Johnny Angel" and both "Wonderful World's") seem bizarre.

Similar guidelines were sent out during the Gulf War.
