i don't know, probably a combination of that and all the emotions and fears driving everyone else. I'm not sure why you're suprised. The same thing went on 10 years ago. Don't you remember? There were all kinds of analyses set forth by various groups with all kinds of agendas. They were scary as hell, predicted all the same things: bio warfare, nukes, chemical warfare, terrorist attacks, how awful the terrain was, how poorly equipped we were, Vietnam all over again, etc. They utilized ex spooks, former military analysts, etc to guess what the .mil was planning, etc. too. I'm sure others remember. It sticks in my mind because I took a lot of personal risk protesting the Gulf War--the begining of the end of my marriage. And it was a real surprise to all of us involved to see the whole thing go off seemingly without a hitch. We'd been so encouraged by a lot of resistance to a 'war', prior to the invasion. Very discouraged by the quick turn around in popular sentiment. Funny story about all of us showing up to the portest site with flags the day hostilities broke out... It was pretty demoralizing to watch everyone whoop it up as the military crushed the Iraqi army and laugh to think anyone had been worried by all those reports.
