I don't think that's right. If Brad found anti-imperialist
views offensive he would never have been here in the first
place, nor on PEN-L. What he didn't like was contending with
or working his way through stupid remarks and tedious arguments.
I also imagine he was offended by remarks that suggested or intimated
that the victims of 9-11 were imperialists, that somehow 9-11 was
a blow against imperialism, or that somehow the victims should
not blame the perpetrators but should blame the U.S. gov under
the 'root cause' doctrine. You never, for instance, saw him
advocate any particular type of retaliation (nor did he support
military action in the Balkans).

In principle, yes, but look at the two examples you gave. Brad left
because he found anti-imperialist views offensive; I don't think he'd
ever be a candidate for a peace movement. Leo was rampantly
aggressive, spewing out about 13,000 words (by my quick count),
attacking the motives, honesty, and fundamental humanity of people he
didn't agree with. If you can't talk openly about the role of U.S.
imperialism in inspiring this horrid crime, then any peace movement
has nothing to contribute but pious wishes that will be ignored.
