There's a great New Yorker cartoon I've never
forgotten.  An elderly couple sitting in chairs
in their living room.  Woman is holding up a
badge and saying, "Yes I know you have been
a communist for 40 years.  I'm an FBI agent
and I've been keeping an eye on you all this time."

or something like that.

figure I've heard repeatedly over the yrs. was that by the '56 crisis inside
the CPUSA, a third of their members were FBI snitches. (This phenomenon,
natch, had a Hollywood presentation as well, in the book made into a movie,
"I Was A Communist For The FBI, " in the 50's.
