i saw a mccain press conference on cspan yesterday. i don't know whether it was live or pre-recorded.

a reporter asked whether the u.s. would be sending ground troops into afghanistan

answer (i went to cspan.org to get the exact quote):

"i know of no military expert who contemplates an occupation of pakistan, of afghanistan"

oops

i don't want to make too much of this misstatement, but i wonder how likely it is that u.s. troops might be deployed to ensure the stability of the current government of pakistan. i understand that there are large numbers of taliban and bin laden supporters within that nation, and, of course, it is believed that pakistan possesses up to 25 nuclear weapons of various capabilities.
