The Executive Secretary of the Russia-Belarus Union, Mr. Pavel Borodin, is not ruling out possibilities of RBU enlargement. He stated this yesterday in the Russia's second biggest city where he came to consider perspectives of realizing various projects in the RBU frames.-
Along with Armenia and Moldova, which are considering their accession to the Union, Ukraine and Kazakhstan may eventually join it as well. Similar proposals and initiatives have come also from other former Soviet republics, Mr. Borodin said.
As was already reported by INFOTAG, accession to the RBU was one of the main 2001 electoral pledges of the Moldovan Communist Party. Shortly after the parliamentary election, Moldova had acquired observer status at several RBU structures, but did not submit an official application on joining the Union. Having realized that a considerable proportion of the Moldovan population did not back this intention, President Voronin statedthe initiative needs to be scrutinized in order to adopt a well-thought decision. He is not ruling out a possibility of holding a referendum on that issue. ST. PETERSBURG, APRIL 2, INFOTAG
