Oodles and oodles of life

If you are turned off by modernity and materialism and attracted to 
religious ways of looking at life and death, I'd think that you might 
as well pick a religion -- zen or whatever -- and stick to it.  Why 
develop a new jargon of authenticity, when older ones are just as 
serviceable?
