re. nsc-68 and present, acheson and nitze characterized ussr as inimical to 'u.s. way of life', they assert cold war will be a long war and american public must be prepared to make sacrifices...

as for soviet union's demise, part of nsc-68 was about forcing it into militarism race, reaganauts perpetuated myth that soviets were spending more on military than u.s. when it was so obviously spending less in real terms, that ussr was spending more relative to size of its economy was factor in its eventual collapse as nsc-68 had hoped...

someone made reference to nsc-48, this 1949 document endorsed integrating asian economies into japanese 'workshop' (document's language), suggested us remilitarize japan to help police region, raised possible 'rollback' strategy to include 'liberation' of north korea, nsc-48 was catalyst for korean war... michael hoover
