What's especially fascinating about it are the constant references to the Constitution and even the Federalist; the actual history of the 20th century is erased, replaced by a truly nutty rant that the US is a free society and the Soviet Union is a menacing, underhanded "slave society" -- Athens vs. Sparta, writ thermonuclear (alternately, Arisia vs. Eddore, for sci-fi fans). Elsewhere, the same document estimates Western Europe's per capita GDP in 1948 was 28% of the US level, while Soviet per cap incomes are pegged at 19% of US levels (http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/nsc-hst/nsc-68-6.htm).

Ironic, that the Empire's 50-year crusade to crush an autarkic semiperiphery would lead, by an ineluctable dialectical logic, to its eventual demise.
