I agree with your two criticisms. I wasn't involved in this call, but I was puzzled when I wrote the sentence that mentioned globalization. I think it was unnecessary to make this connection.
I've been reading some Chomsky in recent days and he gave me some insights. I have to wonder if Sharon saw an opportunity to strike back at the Palestinians using the naked aggression and rhetoric that Bush was using against Afghanistan. What better time to be a U.S. puppet and destroy your enemies using the rhetoric of the "terrorism war."
