For (1) doesn't one take the red line metro to Woodley Park? For (2) 
doesn't one take the red line metro to Tenleytown, and then either 
find a shuttle bus to the American University main campus or hike a 
mile west on Nebraska to the WWI chemical weapons dump that is 
American University?
