HANOI: Two Vietnamese police officers are to stand trial for torturing to death the suspected perpetrator of a grenade attack against the home of a village police chief, an official daily said Monday.
Prosecutors decided to press charges against Major Hoang Hong Thai and Captain Nguyen Anh Dung after a post-mortem on prisoner Khong Van Thoi found that he had been beaten to death while in their custody in January, the justice ministry daily Phap Luat (The Law) said.
The two officers had arrested Thoi on suspicion of carrying out the December grenade attack on the home of the police chief of Cao Phong commune in revenge for a raid in which a large quantity of illegal weapons were seized.
The police chief was injured in the grenade attack.
No date has yet been set for the trial.
