CB: This is not what one would call an imperialist relationship. Socialism made quite an advance over the old prison house of nations ------------ Soviet economic policy was largely driven by political reasons. The outlying Republics were heavily subsidized to keep nationalist separatism down -- as well as out of a desire to industrialize those countries -- and the Warsaw Pact countries even more so. A friend visited Tallinn from Moscow in the early 70s with his parents and says he couldn't believe how well people lived there.
