An admirable statement on the whole -- but the ending reminds me of the illustrations of bathos in Pope's _Peri Bathous, or The Art of Sinking in Verse_ (Example: O thou Dalhousie, the Great God of War / Lieutenant Colonel to the Earl of Mar.) The man's highest hope is a braver left in the DP. How pathetic.
