Well, it would depend on the political/economic pay off, wouldn't it? So far as I know, American elites don't do something for nothing, no matter how noble the ends.

Haven't closely followed this thread, but I'm surprised by the lack of reference to the many writings about Israel, most recently in Finkelstein's "Holocaust Industry," where US "concern" for Israeli Jews had little to do with Holocaust guilt, but plenty to do with Israel's 1967 victory and subsequent role as regional cop (as well as surrogate in Central America and southern Africa). I mean, we all know this, right?
