Charles: See _The Autobiography of Malcolm X_ wherein he observes the predominance of negative ( "nega" is a Latin root for "black" too) connotations for the word "black" in English , and relates it to WHITE supremacy (racism), although , of course, night is dark, and one can't see dangers as well as in day. On the other hand, if you are prey, in some ways it is easier to hide at night.

Not much, just the utter racism of the term and the need to look at the construct of legality from the perspectives afforded by Charles Tilly and Morton Horwitz, among others.... - ---------------- Huh? Racism? I had assumed "black" referred simply to being invisible, as in at night. Same reason evil is associated with the color black, because nasty critters and things can sneak up on you.
