See, "Haven In A Heartless World, " by Christpher Lasch and, "The Policing of Families, " by Jacques Donzelot. A crititique of Lasch'es left conservatism was penned by Stephanie Engel in Socialist Review after the Culture of Narcissism became a mass market paperback bestseller. Jimmy Carter invited Lasch and Daniel Bell to Camp David just before his, "Malise, " speech in '78. (Anyone read Benjamin Barber's recent one on Clinton? I skimmed a little yesterday. The sections on Scocpol (damn I can never remember how to spell Theda's name!) et. al. and others to Clinton's left trying to push the White House towards a class based socdem set of policy positions are worth a look.)
