You are mistaken. Islamic fundamentalism is a child of the 1970s. It was given a big boost by the Iranian revolution. Basically it is a reaction to the failure of pan-Arabism, a secular "socialist" doctrine associated variously with Nasr in Egypt and Baathism in Syria and Iraq.
