Sure there was: there were workers who were paid cash wages, entrepreneurs who accumulated, a banking and credit system based on the gold standard, a world trading system, the East Indian Trading Co. extracting all those juicy surplus- profits, etc. Thompson's "The Making of the English Working Class" is pretty convincing on this.
