Police defuse large car-bomb in Russia's third-largest city

MOSCOW (AP) - Police on Saturday defused a large bomb parked in the center of Novosibirsk, Russia's third-largest city, an official of the city's Ministry for Emergency Situations said.

The explosives-laden compact Zhiguli was parked outside a 12-story residential building, the official said, speaking anonymously

The bomb consisted of several grenades, 400 grams (0.9 pounds) of TNT, 600 grams (1.3 pounds) of plastic explosive, four 20-liter (five-gallon) canisters of gasoline and bolts and other hardware which are often used as projectiles in bombs, according to the news agency ITAR-Tass.

The explosives were discovered after a passerby reported to police that he had seen suspicious bound-together objects in the car, according to the news agency.

No arrests were reported and there was no immediate speculation on why the building may have been a target.
