On the 100th anniversary of Marx' death, the Sociology Board at UCSC sponsored a symposium on marxism. Gareth Stedman Jones, then still on the editorial board of New Left Review, was one of the speakers. His rubbishing of neo-marxism caused much commotion esp. under us undergrads in the audience. A friend of mine brought up the work of Stuart Hall and the Birmingham School, at which Jones shot back that he was more than familiar with their work.

For an example of the work of Jones when he wasn't so facile about marxism see a chapter of his in, "Western Marxism, " an anthology of articles, mostly from NLR on Lukacs, Gramsci and co. Includes a classic by then maoist Andre Glucksmann on Althusser, "A Ventriliquist Structuralism." Glucksmann later became, along with B.H. Levy, ,one of the so-called New Philosophers in France.
