developmental: kohlberg, piaget, that sort of thing. i see no reason to elaborate. that lacanian theory is a departure from kohlberg/piaget/etc is pretty standard stuff.

heh. damn, i'm sorry C, i was in a hurry. what i mean is that lacan is a departure from modernist notions of development (progress, resolution). it is certainly true that lacan talking about developmental transitions, but he's certainly not talking about moving through stages in the sense that freud often implied in his writings on morality. when i get time, i'll pull butler out of storage and point to some relevant sections i'm thinking of.
