"Zionist Lobby" or American interests?

Gilad Atzmon writes: "Zionism is a very singular political method aimed at perfecting the transformation of world disasters and human pain into Jewish gain" ("The Zionist Lobby and American Foreign Policy," _CounterPunch_ 22 August 2002, <http://www.counterpunch.org/atzmon0822.html>). Wrong. The majority of Jews in the world have little -- perhaps nothing -- to gain materially from Zionism and Israel, much less the policy of the continuing occupation, whether or not they can see this truth themselves today.

The problem with the CounterPunch articles by Atzmon and Michael Neumann is not so much anti-Semitic implications (which are absent in the Neumann article but present in the Atzmon one) as they ignore class politics, of the USA, Israel, the Palestinians, the predominantly Arab states, etc., altogether. Therefore, they lead the reader away from any meaningful attempt at understanding the workings of the Empire and Zionism. -- Yoshie
