More labor union futility at Borders Books

In what can only be described as an exercise in futility, workers at Borders Books original store in Ann Arbor, Michigan voted Friday 51 to 4 to join United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 876 - a lopsided margin that defies common sense.

Twelve Borders stores have had union elections in the last six years, and six have voted the union in, but thankfully, none are currently under contract, due to Borders wily and adept expertise at fighting union drives and breaking contracts (detailed at the tell-all anti-union Web site http://www.bordersunion.com ).

Despite Borders ongoing success at informing and educating its workers, the Ann Arbor store is, inexplicably, the second Borders store to go union in the past three months. Adding to the confusion is the geographical proximity of the store to the company's headquarters - right next door.

Surprisingly, the union campaign at Borders is a grassroots phenomenon, having been carried off over the years without the assistance of the UFCW International Union, which is totally focused on its "People's Campaign for Justice at Walmart" - which, to everyone's good fortune, has been notably long on campaigning and short on people.

Oh well, it's only a matter of time before Borders workers go down to defeat in contract negotiations again. It's just sad that they can't seem to get the message that they are wasting their time.
