If he _really_ is attempting to speak to the ruling classes, one has to assume rather extensive lack of knowledge of empirical actuality -- or else his motives are fair game. After all, there have always been _ruling class_ figures in the U.S. to urge restraint upon their class, and when have they ever been honored. Why should a duke prof expect a better hearing?

And in any case, the only people who will listen to him are people with anti-imperialist intentions -- and the only power such have (if they listen to him) is to dilute or clutter the growth of left opposition to killing a lot of people.
