This Joel Schwarz seems a bit dim-witted. If you aren't religious, then you don't believe in hell and therefor you can't be said to be deliberately taking a risk.
So if "going to hell just doesn't matter" was the attitude of the men in question, then they are actually religious. If you think you're going to hell, then you are accepting the fundamental premise of a religion.
