Lott steps down as Senate leader

By Rex Nutting

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., will resign as majority leader of the Senate, Republican sources told the Associated Press and CNN. Lott had been under increasing pressure from Republicans and Democrats after he endorsed the segregationist views once held by retiring Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C. Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., has said he would run for majority leader. President Bush strongly condemned Lott's comments. Lott apologized for the comments several times.
