My work to convince more to take this "not even with a gun to my head" attitude is showing some results. I got an e-mail today from a member of the English Dept. who I have never met face to face, and here is how it began:
"I've found your posts about the Dems disappointing. You've shattered several myths for me, Carrol. And thank you!"
I'm making some headway also in weaning a few people I've met in the local anti-war coalition away from the Dems.
A "razor's edge" expresses too comfortable a position to be an appropriate metaphor for the position of those who try to mainatain a progressive attitude while voting for dems. Wordsworth has a line, "Yet tears to human suffering are due" which I like to paraphrase as "Even communists have a right to some fun" -- and what can be more innocent fun that laughing at the squirming of the Dems.
