That isn't trust. That's survival: people are justifiably terrified of being turned into charcoal the next time they take that commuter jet to O'Hare, and they want the Gov't to do something. Rising expectations of the Gov't is good for the Left, not bad.

It would've collapsed, but the top political elites would be bulletproof silicon/financier types, rather than a bunch of chuckleheaded petrocrats who can't tell a baguette from a cucumber. This is like pouring gasoline onto the firestorm which was going to erupt anyway, after the Bubble imploded.
