Toyota to shift pick-up truck output to Thailand

Tokyo, February 6: Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. plans to shift all its pick-up truck production to Thailand, making it a major supply base for exports to South-East Asia and the Middle East, a report said on Wednesday. Toyota plans to spend more than $230 million in its existing Samrong plant in Samut Prakan, South of Bangkok, to treble annual pick-up output there to 1,50,000 units from 2004,aan economic daily said. Toyota has applied to Thailand's investment board for tax exemptions to import manufacturing facilities and expects to get a formal reply this month, the paper said, without citing sources. The top Japanese automaker currently consigns pick-up production to subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd., which manufactures Hilux trucks at a Tokyo plant. - PTI
