It makes no sense for the US, because Iran & Iraq were the regional threat that "justified" US military presence in the Gulf. Removing them means no more excuse for the bases. The only possible gain is to sabotage US Big Oil's European competitors who are doing business with Iran & Iraq.

It makes admirable sense for Sharon, who woud love to see the US-SA relationship terminated, Iran punished for supporting Hezbollah, and Iraq eliminated as a Scud launchpad. North Korea is supplying long-range missile technology to Iraq & Iran, which is why it's on the list. China has also sold misslies to Iran, which threaten tankers in the Gulf, but again that's only a threat to US interests, not Israel's. Israel enjoys a fruitful arms-trade-based relationship with China. So if this axis of evil business ends up provoking war and revolution in the ME, Sharon will know his life has not been in vain, especially if he finds an excuse to use his nukes.
