Of course, slipperly ol' "Honest Abe" himself played a leading role in 
clearing the way for enthronement of corporations well before the Civil War. 

  Prior to becoming president he was one of the era's leading railroad 
lawyers, saving the railroads oodles of money in successful tax minimization 
lawsuits.
