Bush decides to topple Saddam

On the principle that the military always fights the last war, we can assume that there are those in Washington pressing for an "Afghan solution" to the problem of Iraq. There the formula was US air power plus Northern Alliance troops. US air power is already in place in regard to Iraq, but who's to play the Northern Alliance role? The Kurds are no match even for Saddam's reduced military, and the CIA retreads of the Iraqi National Congress have no military at all. But there is an obvious candidate -- America's New Best Friend in the region, Turkey. Flush with arms from the Clinton Administration and successfully bloodied in the most extensive ethnic cleansing of the 1990s in their own southeast, the Turks would be glad to establish "enduring freedom" in Iraq. When the smoke clears and killing is done, Turkey could have a piece of Iraq, thus occupying all of Kurdistan (and some oil), while a INC Karzai could be found for Baghdad. Q.E.D. --CGE
