The following remarks are exploratory.

Opportunity implies a subject that has the opportunity -- and there is no subject here, since "The Left" does not exist. And since it does not exist, it is sort of silly to blame it for missing an opportunity or urge it to grasp that opportunity.

And since no agent exists to grasp the alleged opportunity, it is incoherent to call it an opportunity.

The fact is that no one has _ever_ come up with an explantaion of why large movements (and within them a "left") come into existence -- and no one has _ever_ predicted in advance such a movement.

Who is Carl talking to? How does he define his audience?

You are the left Carl. That is, "the left" is merely a collection of isolated leftists.

And the left never has deserved or not deserved anything. The verb does not really make sense in this context. What are you going to do: line the left up and shoot it? Or pin a ribbon on it if it turns out to be deserving?
