Kagarlitsky's taste for the crisis-paradigm and conspiracy theory is flamboyant even by Russian standards. He's got a conspiracy theory on the 1999 apartment bombings in Moscow that is almost Hakki-like in its complexity (not that I think it unlikely that a conspiracy was involved, but his is labyrinthine).

Berezovsky is claiming that soon he will release documentation proving that Putin ordered the 1999 bombings as a way to justify going into Chechnya and boosting his ratings. This is a pretty bizarre development, since Putin was basically put into power by Berezovsky, who orchestrated his campaign...

It was a good conference - smart people, though a bit too fond of crisis for my taste. Boris most of all - I always like to hear what he has to say (though I never quite get his frequent "old Jewish jokes"), but every panic or recession is a crisis to Boris. Maybe it comes from living in Russia.
