Islamic nations to launch TV channel
DUBAI
TO CORRECT Islam's "distorted image", the culture ministers of Islamic nations have decided to launch a satellite television channel, Malaysian minister of culture, arts and tourism Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said.
As a step "to correct the distorted image of Islam being presented by the Western media", the culture ministers at their meeting in Doha on Sunday unanimously approved the proposal, Fadzir told Bernama on Monday.
It is a major step towards countering negative propaganda against the Muslim world, he said adding, "We are very excited about the proposed channel... Malaysia would provide full support in setting up the channel."
Asked when he expected the channel to be launched, Fadzir said, "as soon as possible".
The lead, in providing funds for the channel, has been taken by Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, he said.
The channel will broadcast programmes in several languages, including English, French, Spanish and Arabic. ( AGENCIES )
