There might have been some point to this thread if people could let go for a minute of their pet peeve of sex/race discrimination and consider that the starving refugees may have been more interested in Fisk's bag and pockets than his race (and if they weren't Moslems, his flesh). Additionally, as Joe said and Brad ducked, why should they believe that Fisk wan't one of the thousands of foreigners, all but a handful of which were in Afghanistan solely to kill Afghans or to lie about those murders in the media. Either way, killing Fisk for food or to prevent him from - presumably - continuing to murder Afghans would be a rational and _civic_ act, one that, to the best of those refugees' knowledge, would save lives.

Americans always imagine that everywhere in the world, violence is the result of pathological hatred or fanaticism, as it is at home. "Murderous indiscriminate rage" is something the West, and in particular the warlike, homicide-ridden US, breeds. Afghans do a lot of killing and dying, but it's never senseless or random, never the result of a dumb-assed domino theory, or a sadistic desire to crush third-world upstarts. It's more like Big Oil's devious but calculated Enduring Freedom, a rational means to an end.
