Charles the tankie supporting the Soviet interventions in Hungary '56 and Czechoslakia again! Shane Mage, in The American Socialist in '57, ripped apart one of your sources (I presume), "The Truth About Hungary, " by Herbert Aptheker, 1957, (Carl) Marzani & Munsell.

"Tankie, " = Anti-Stalinist communist slang for supporters of Soviet intervention in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Used in Eurocommunist journals like, "Marxism Today, " the journal of the CPGB.Other refs see, "The Left In Britain, 1956-1968, " edited by Peter Widgery of the UK SwP, Penguib Books.

“The National Guard, the revolutionary committees and the workers councils are solidly in the hands of freedom fighters who are fighting on two fronts: against the Stalinists and against the reactionaries.” –reprinted in the Young Socialist pamphlet, The Hungarian Revolution (1959)

>...First, as Aptheker and his admirers admit, his Communist politics are
inseparable from his performance as a historian. He has written history in order to provide fuel for an impossible Communist future. Carefully removed from his resume, as it appears in the tributes, are the scores of his historical articles, books and pamphlets in which Aptheker uses his credibility as a Ph.D., and historian, to produce the worst kind of Stalinist claptrap and distortion. First and foremost is his notorious 1956 book, The Truth About Hungary. Written soon after the Soviet invasion of Hungary, and meant to stop the growing disillusionment and despair in Western Communist ranks, its scholarly veneer was used to depict the Hungarian people’s rebellion as a CIA coup against the socialist regime instigated by ex-fascists and monarchists who wanted to restore a fascist regime in Hungary. As British Communists read the shocking dispatches from their own Daily Worker correspondent Peter Freyer, whose coverage of the event reflected the reality of the rebellion as an authentic uprising of the working class and population as a whole against the Soviet-sponsored regime, Aptheker used his stature as the Party’s leading intellectual to write a crude piece of Moscow-inspired propaganda to justify the invasion. Many years ago, I asked Aptheker about this travesty of a book. He answered proudly: “I had a job to do for the Communist movement, and I did it.”
