The illusion of a middle class
is held not only by professional sociologist like you but also by the
people so classified. "Professionals" (downsized or otherwise) are
unconscious enough to really believe (a) that a middle class exists and
(b) that they belong to it.

Now that's what I call an authoritative statement. But I'm not so big on this whole authority thing, so allow me to say that (a) there is a middle class, and (b) I am conscious of belonging to it. So there.
