1. Estonia gets heaps of money from Finland, to which it is culturally very close. Estonian is closely related to Finnish.
2. The Baltics were always better off than the rest of the USSR. They were loaded with Russian subsidized goods.
3. They werent part of the USSR for nearly as long as the rest. They were occupied countries a la the Eastern Bloc. Easier to psychologically adapt to a market economy.
4. They started trying to integrate with Europe from the get go.
5. The USSRs foreign debt was all taken on by one of the republics, Russia, in 1991 in a really, really stupid move.
