Pugliese:

I was raised Catholic, too. Sin all you like 6 days a week, confess on Sunday. Go sin some more! --------------- I have some friends who were raised Catholic and follow (or once followed) that regime. Saw believer Gary Wills last week bash away at the Vatican. Then read his _Reagan's America_. At one point he says Carter placed the grain embargo on the Soviet Union because of Afghanistan, at another point says Carter did it because of Poland. Otherwise, it's pretty good. He writes that at their convention in 1932, the Democrats had a platform that promised to "cut government spending by a fourth, balance the budget, and remove the federal government from all fields of private enterprise except public works and conservation.* When the convention chose its candidate, Franklin Roosevelt, he pledged to support the platform "one hundred percent."**" The platform also had a plank calling for the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. Wills also goes into how the hard right felt betrayed after Eisenhower allowed the New Deal programs to live on and become entrenched.
