Canadian and Australian scientists say they believe industrial pollution in North America and Europe may have contributed to drought conditions in Africa.
In an article published Wednesday in New Scientist Magazine, researchers say a computer model they created shows that factories and power stations in northern Europe and North America may have altered weather patterns over the past 40 years.
The article says that when the researchers added the huge sulfur emissions of the 1980s into the model, the northern climates cooled and drove tropical rain belts south, causing droughts in Africa's Sahel region.
The researchers said African drought conditions have become less severe in recent years, which they say could be due to implementation of industrial pollution controls.
