It depends partly on what one believes Chomsky offers. If you think of him as a political theorist or leader, then criticism of him may be a big deal. For 30+ years I've just thought of him as an invaluable source of information on the shenanigans of the u.s. government and its various arms (official and unofficial). And nothing about Chomsky as a person or a theorist can affect that. I doubt that those who attack him are really all that interested in discrediting him the eyes of others -- they are just trying to build up their own morale as imperialist toadies.
