lack of student aid

but how are people racking up 80-100k in debt. what loans are they taking 
out. i recall learning that you could get 8k for grad school, but even then 
you have to be in grad school ten years for that kind of debt!?

I racked up almost that much in my Ph.D. program. Of course, I am in the
bizarre situation of earning so little that I qualify for big debt payment
reductions for the time being, while simultaneously having a pretty
materially comfortable life (dollar/ruble exchange rate).
