Sharon's grand plan? WL 327
Arial Sharon came to power in Israel on a promise of securing the
lives and property of Israelis. His year in office has coincided with
some of the worst violence since the expulsion of the Palestinians in
1948. It has provoked the new tactic of suicide bombing, to which the
Israeli army has not found an answer, nor seems likely to do. At the
same time the Israeli spokesmen reiterate tirelessly the obvioulsy
nonsensical statement that the military actions are taken to protect
Israeli civilians.
Whatever else the Israeli prime minister is - war criminal, thug,
schemer or arch-villain - he is no fool. Thus he must well know that
the strategy of occupying Arab territory in order to worst his Palesinian
enemies is likely to have unforeseen consequences and possibly adverse
results. His invasions of Lebanon in the 1980's were spectacularly
unsuccessful in ridding the Israelis of the threats of terror attacks.
Not until the Israeli army was forced to withdraw did things return to
the usual state of muted hostility.
So one must ask, what is the motive behind the series of military
incursions into the Palestinian territory on the West Bank if it is
clearly not for the stated purpose of defending Israel against attack?
It provokes more terrorist action - indeed, since it is itself essentially
designed to strike terror in the Palestinian population and break their
resistance, it might almost be planned to do just that. The result of
the Palestinians suicidal resistance, moreover, is to increase the U.S.
government's support for Israel and for Sharon, which suits him very
well.
The latest result of these actions and reactions has been for George
Dubya to announce the end of the Palestinian right to choose their own
leaders. The arrogant ultimatum for them to use new elections in order
to replace Yasser Arafat and members of his Authority is a crowning
success for Sharon's policy. Then his practice of scattering Jewish
settlements across the West Bank in defiance of international law and the
signed agreements is also showing more success. 40% of the West Bank
is all that will be left to the "reformed" Palestinian Authority and it will be
criss-crossed by military roads and dominated by Israeli army strong-points.
This form of apartheid that has been perfected over the years since
1969 is to be sanctified by American support and international agreement
and if, as is inevitable, the Palestinians refuse to accept it, their
leaders will be deported, first to the vast prison known as the Gaza
Strip and probably after an interval, the remainder will be tipped into
Jordan, always seen as the Palestinian state by Sharon and other
Israeli fascists. Long ago the Jews expelled the Canaanites from the
land of Israel on the bidding of Jehovah and some of the Jewish fanatics
since 1948 have always believed that it was necessary to repeat the
process.
Presumably Sharon, being no fool, is quite able to see the future
eventuality of such an outcome. He may even have planned it. Or he may
simpl leave it to the God of the Jews to ensure that, in the long run,
all will come to pass. But in the world in which we live, he can only
rely on the strong backing of the United States paying the military and
other costs; the acquiescence of the world at large; and the passive
acceptance by 100 million Arabs. And who knows, the worms may yet turn. ...
