Jesus did invoke the danger of hellfire, and he did say give unto caesar,etc., which implied approval of slavery. I don't think "he" (the character in the gospels) gave much basis for the doctrine that really is at the center of much christian horror -- the doctrine of the trinity. Christianity as politically conservative and a sanction to torture is not a misreading of what is in the gospels.
