Key here is Marx's phrase, "revolutionizing practice." Only in full scale struggle (including risk of life and willingness to kill) will bring about humans fit to build socialism.
This is entirely separate from the simple empirical fact that face with the choice between socialism and the destruction of humanity (including themselves) capitalist classes will make the latter choice.
