Has such an "externally imposed austerity regime" ever occurred in which powers that might impose it were under the military occupation of the power on which it was to be imposed?
Surely, an ejection of U.S. military forces from Europe, Japan, and the Mediterranean would be a necessary prerequiste.
Also, such an austerity program would violently disrupt the power of patriotism to calm class consciousness.
